Remember Janet’s plant sale? I got a message from her the other day with photos of a magnificent stand of 8′ tall yellow, daisy-like flowers on sturdy stems that need no staking. I bought one of these unidentified plants at the sale, and while it tops out at 6′, I thought photos of my single plant would be easier to see plant structure as I send out my plea to all the ace plant-identifiers out there.
Here is a shot of the leaf structure.
And the first blossom, with a few of the buds waiting in the wings.
If you look carefully, you can see the overall architecture of the plant in this not-so-hot photo on a hot day. I expressed my desire to have more of these to Janet, and she said not to throw any more money her way, as they multiply quickly. How’s that for truth in advertising? I intend to buy more next spring anyway, as I am impatient to smother this fence in plant life. If you can enlighten us with a name, Janet and I will both be eternally grateful.
BEWARE!
Trifidlike Hellenium.
It will eat you and everything else in its way.
Six foot tall?
Don’t make me laugh. Our son is 6’8 and it dwarfed him.
By chance I happen to have a picture of it up, posted yesterday.
Honest. Simple coincidence. It looks harmless, even decorative, but don’t be fooled.
It took us five seasons to eradicate it. And it will be there again next year.
This is the bronze version, but I will now put the plain one below it if you give me a minute.
Address in my name.
Joco~More synchronicity. What’s going on here? That’s a bronzy Hellenium off to the right, and I have always been frustrated with its runty profile. My heart beats harder at the thought of a tall bronze beauty, but I will keep your warning in mind.
Joco~Scuzez-moi…it’s to the left, but I’m sure you figured that out already.
I was going to say Maximillian sunflower. Helianthus maximilliani. Check the photos, Ricki and see if there is a similarity.

Grace
Grace~Flowers similar, but leaves all wrong. What do you think of Joco’s guess? Thanks for pointing me to that site.
Confusion reigns.
I have a crick in my neck from turning left to right and back again.
You scurried in the wrong direction. Click on the jo©o bit with the name link and that should lead you to the bronze flower. I went by the leaves in your picture which are identical to our monster’s.
Sorry, didn’t mean to bold the entire sentence, just the letter -d- in bronzed. Zap as required. don’t want to defile your comment section any further 🙂
I need previews.
‘When I use a word,’ Humpty Dumpty said, in a rather scornful tone,’ it means just what I choose it to mean, neither more nor less.’
‘The question is,’ said Alice, ‘whether you can make words mean so many different things.’
‘The question is,’ said Humpty Dumpty, ‘which is to be master – that’s all.’

When I say “Helenium”, I mean of course, “Rudbeckia”.
In fact Rudbecka Double Gold in this case.
To think I have cursed this plant by the wrong name all these years.

Joco~Your macro photo does look a lot like the flower on the plant in question, but the eye is quite a bit darker. The link in your last comment took me to a plant with much fluffier flowers and less sturdy stems. What I like about my plant is the way the stalks stand right up like good soldiers (which Dolly Parton compared to her main assets). Fun reference to Wonderland, by the way.
Thanks for your persistence in trying to help me out here. I will search the HPSO fall sale for a match. Failing that, I will go with your hunch.
The author talked about several engaging points in this posting. I came across this article by searching Bing and I’ve got to confess that I am currently subscribed for your blog, it is quite decent (;
